I have been travelling in Central America since 2001 and I cannot help finding myself thinking, reading and dreaming about this beautiful subcontinent. After traveling from Panama to Mexico I was particualrly fascinated by the cultures and people of Nicaragua and Guatemala. The openess of people and their genuine interested was a particularly striking feature of Nicaragua. In Guatemala, on the other hand it was the inhabitant’s calmness and clear spanish language that enchanted me.

After returning again I finally opened my eyes to the natural beauties of Panama and Costa Rica. While Panama is hard to access for a traveller (particularly as backpacker) it offers vast untouched natural reserves – especially in the Darien area south of Panama city. Costa Rica on the other hand has established a system of national parks and preserves that covers about a third of the country. Ecotourism has a long history here. The touristic sector here has its roots strongly in the preservation of nature.
